our logo: Katika is a Swahili word, which in our context means "out of" or "from" Africa. It can also mean "to" Africa. So in essence Katika Africa means we are from Africa and want to take you on your journey with us to Africa.
The tree is the Baobab tree or the Mbuyu tree in the Swahili language. It is known as the 'Tree of Life' and the centre of some wise and wondrous stories, myths and legends. It is an enormous tree growing to heights of 75 feet and can be as large as 60 feet around the trunk. It is one of the oldest living trees, having been measured at over 2000 years old. The Baobab is the giver and keeper of life to many tribes in Africa. It is literally the tree of a 1000 uses, being used for everything from shelter to medicine and even burial chambers. It is the meeting place for villages and relates to much of everyday life.
In the way that the tree is so much more than just a tree to those who surround it, Katika Africa is more than just a travel company. Our philosophy is to use owner operated lodges and camps that give back to their communities and go that extra mile in taking care of the Africa around them. The tree symbolizes Africa to us, the interdependence of nature and human culture and the need for each to have a role in sustaining a symbiotic relationship. We hope our journeys deepen our guests knowledge and understanding of this unique land that is Africa.
